Notice: Support for Industrial Decarbonisation (Modality B)

Description of the operation: This project is based on the Decarbonisation of part of the production processes at the Pinewells factory located in Arganil, replacing the electrical energy consumption from the grid with self-consumption of energy produced by photovoltaic panels, as well as installing a plant which produces renewable energy for self-consumption at the Pinewells factory.
Goals: The project aims to decarbonise the company’s production processes and reduce GHG emissions, reducing its carbon footprint.
Expected results:
During the first year of activity of the photovoltaic plant, savings are expected in terms of cash flows generated, which will translate into a positive Internal Rate of Return [IRR].
In terms of results, the project will be measured according to the following goals:
- Estimated annual reduction in greenhouse gas emissions - 3,812.78 tonnes CO2 equivalent;
- Annual reduction in terms of final energy consumption - 4,424.20 tons of oil equivalent (toe).

Project overview:
The project Pinewells is presenting is part of the purposes and priority of Notice 26/SI/2017, under the heading “Enhancing the capacity of an existing establishment”, promoting the use of innovation, resulting in the production of new and significantly improved products, with higher increased value, to be traded internationally. Likewise, and in response to this notice, it is expected to that 5 new jobs will be created, which is essential to the proper functioning of its activity, as it is estimated to grow, with a higher productive capacity to meet the high demand.
Thus, the company will use advanced and sustainable technologies which will enable it to maintain the raw material technical characteristics, aiming at a higher quality product, as well as rendering the production flexible for larger quantities, taking into account a reduction of the manufacturing costs in order to achieve larger margins.

Project summary:
The SI Innovation 7034 Project launched in accordance with the Community Framework P2020 can be summed up as a substantial improvement introduced in the production process, allowing for converting less noble raw material into wood pellets without reducing the quality of the final product, reducing equipment wear and tear and improving the efficiency of overall production.
